The Procedures for Making Official Complaints provide a clear, fair, and confidential process for raising concerns, ensuring all complaints are managed respectfully, consistently, and in accordance with club and Basketball Australia policies.

Coach Code of Conduct

Purpose

Coaches play a critical role in creating a positive, safe and inclusive basketball environment. Coaches are expected to act as role models and uphold PPBC's values at all times.


As a Coach, I Will:

Safety and Welfare

  • Place the safety and wellbeing of players above winning and performance outcomes.
  • Provide a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Never engage in conduct that could reasonably be considered abuse, bullying, harassment, grooming or exploitation.
  • Promote child-safe practices and comply with PPBC's Safeguarding and Member Protection Policy.
  • Hold and maintain a current Ochre Card where required.

Respect and Behaviour

  • Treat all players, officials, parents, volunteers and spectators with respect.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship and professionalism.
  • Encourage fair play and respect for the rules of basketball.
  • Refrain from using offensive, abusive, discriminatory or inappropriate language.
  • Respect the decisions of referees and officials.

Coaching Responsibilities

  • Recognise that all players have the right to participate and enjoy basketball.
  • Encourage skill development, teamwork and personal growth.
  • Provide constructive feedback in a positive manner.
  • Avoid favouritism and ensure team selections are fair and transparent.
  • Encourage players to compete according to the rules and spirit of the game.

Communication

  • Communicate respectfully with players and parents.
  • Use appropriate communication methods when engaging with junior players.
  • Avoid private electronic communications with children where possible.
  • Include parents or guardians in communications involving junior athletes when appropriate.

Prohibited Behaviour

I will not:

  • Bully, intimidate or humiliate participants.
  • Engage in physical, emotional or psychological abuse.
  • Participate in inappropriate relationships with players.
  • Consume alcohol or illegal drugs while responsible for players.
  • Behave in a manner that brings PPBC into disrepute.

Breaches

Breaches of this Code may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from coaching duties.

Team Manager Code of Conduct

Purpose

Team Managers play an important role in supporting players, coaches, families and the Club. Team Managers are often the primary point of communication between the Club and team members and are expected to act professionally, respectfully and in the best interests of players and Palmerston Power Basketball Club (PPBC).


As a Team Manager, I Will:

Leadership and Support

  • Act in the best interests of players and the Club at all times.
  • Support coaches in delivering a positive basketball experience.
  • Promote the values of PPBC and encourage good sportsmanship.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with players, parents and Club personnel.

Communication

  • Communicate clearly, respectfully and professionally with players, parents, coaches, officials and Club representatives.
  • Provide accurate and timely information regarding games, training, events and Club activities.
  • Use approved Club communication channels wherever possible.
  • Encourage concerns and questions to be raised through appropriate channels.
  • Avoid engaging in conflict, gossip or negative discussions that may harm individuals or the Club.

Child Safety and Welfare

  • Support and comply with the PPBC Safeguarding and Member Protection Policy.
  • Place the safety and wellbeing of children above all other considerations.
  • Hold and maintain a current Ochre Card where required.
  • Immediately report any concerns relating to child safety, abuse, neglect, grooming, bullying or inappropriate conduct.
  • Ensure all interactions with children are appropriate, respectful and transparent.
  • Avoid situations where I am alone with a child unless unavoidable and authorised.

Privacy and Confidentiality

  • Treat personal information confidentially.
  • Only use player, parent and volunteer information for legitimate Club purposes.
  • Protect player and family contact details from unauthorised disclosure.
  • Respect the privacy of all Club members.
  • Not discuss confidential Club matters outside authorised settings.

Game Day Responsibilities

  • Assist with team administration and logistics.
  • Support a positive and respectful game-day environment.
  • Ensure score sheets, player availability and team information are managed accurately.
  • Help ensure players and families understand competition requirements.
  • Work cooperatively with coaches, referees, officials and venue staff.

Respect and Inclusion

  • Treat all individuals with dignity and respect regardless of:
  • age;
  • ability;
  • gender;
  • cultural background;
  • religion;
  • sexual orientation; or
  • gender identity.
  • Promote inclusion and equal participation opportunities.
  • Support a culture free from discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation.

Online Behaviour

  • Communicate respectfully through email, social media and messaging applications.
  • Ensure communications about junior players include parents or guardians where appropriate.
  • Avoid private messaging junior players unless necessary for Club operations and with appropriate transparency.
  • Not post content that may damage the reputation of a player, official, volunteer or the Club.

Prohibited Behaviour

I will not:

  • Bully, harass, intimidate or discriminate against any person.
  • Use offensive, abusive or inappropriate language.
  • Breach player or family confidentiality.
  • Abuse my position within the Club.
  • Engage in behaviour that could reasonably be considered grooming or exploitation.
  • Consume alcohol or drugs in a manner that impacts my responsibilities.
  • Bring PPBC, Darwin Basketball Association or Basketball NT into disrepute.

Breaches

Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in:

  • Verbal or written warnings;
  • Mandatory education or training;
  • Removal from Team Manager duties;
  • Suspension from Club activities;
  • Termination of volunteer or membership status; or
  • Referral to relevant authorities where required.

Player Code of Conduct

Purpose

All players are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful and enjoyable basketball environment.


As a Player, I Will:

Respect

  • Treat teammates, coaches, referees, volunteers and opponents with respect.
  • Accept decisions made by referees and officials.
  • Respect facilities, equipment and property.

Sportsmanship

  • Play fairly and within the rules.
  • Display good sportsmanship whether winning or losing.
  • Encourage and support teammates.
  • Compete honestly and with integrity.

Behaviour

  • Follow directions from coaches and officials.
  • Use respectful language at all times.
  • Control my emotions and behaviour.
  • Represent PPBC positively both on and off the court.

Safety

  • Report unsafe behaviour or environments.
  • Notify a coach or trusted adult if I feel unsafe.
  • Respect the wellbeing and rights of all participants.

Online Conduct

  • Use social media responsibly.
  • Not engage in cyberbullying or online harassment.
  • Not post content that damages the reputation of the Club or its members.

Prohibited Behaviour

I will not:

  • Bully, harass or intimidate others.
  • Use discriminatory or offensive language.
  • Engage in violence or threatening behaviour.
  • Damage Club property.
  • Bring alcohol, illegal drugs or prohibited substances to Club activities.

Failure to comply with this Code may result in disciplinary action by the Club.

Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct

Purpose

Parents and spectators play an important role in supporting a positive basketball experience for all participants.


As a Parent or Spectator, I Will:

Respect

  • Treat all players, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect.
  • Respect the role and decisions of referees and officials.
  • Encourage all participants regardless of ability.

Positive Support

  • Focus on effort, participation and enjoyment rather than winning.
  • Encourage players to compete fairly.
  • Support the development of all players.
  • Allow coaches to coach and officials to officiate.

Behaviour

  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
  • Communicate concerns through appropriate channels.
  • Be a positive role model for children and young people.

Child Safety

  • Support PPBC's child-safe commitments.
  • Report concerns regarding child welfare or inappropriate behaviour.
  • Respect safeguarding requirements and Club policies.

Online Conduct

  • Communicate respectfully online.
  • Avoid posting abusive, offensive or inflammatory comments.
  • Respect the privacy of players, coaches and officials.

Prohibited Behaviour

I will not:

  • Verbally abuse players, officials, coaches or spectators.
  • Use threatening, intimidating or aggressive behaviour.
  • Enter the playing area unless authorised.
  • Consume alcohol or drugs in a way that affects my behaviour at Club activities.
  • Engage in bullying, discrimination, harassment or victimisation.

Breaches

Failure to comply with this Code may result in removal from Club events, suspension of membership privileges or further disciplinary action.

Committee Member Code of Conduct

Purpose

Committee Members are responsible for leading PPBC with integrity, transparency and accountability.


As a Committee Member, I Will:

Leadership

  • Act in the best interests of PPBC and its members.
  • Promote the values and objectives of the Club.
  • Support a safe, respectful and inclusive culture.

Governance

  • Comply with the Constitution, By-Laws, policies and relevant legislation.
  • Make decisions fairly, consistently and impartially.
  • Maintain confidentiality where required.
  • Exercise due care and diligence in performing duties.

Safeguarding

  • Promote and support child-safe practices.
  • Respond appropriately to complaints and concerns.
  • Ensure safeguarding and member protection obligations are upheld.
  • Support compliance with Ochre Card requirements and reporting obligations.

Respect and Inclusion

  • Treat all members fairly and respectfully.
  • Support diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity.
  • Prevent discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Conflict of Interest

  • Declare any actual, perceived or potential conflicts of interest.
  • Remove myself from discussions or decisions where conflicts exist.
  • Act transparently in all Club business.

Financial Responsibility

  • Use Club funds and resources responsibly.
  • Ensure financial decisions are made in accordance with approved governance processes.
  • Protect Club assets and reputation.

I will not:

  • Misuse my position for personal benefit.
  • Engage in discriminatory, abusive or inappropriate conduct.

  • Bring the Club into disrepute.

Breaches

Committee Members who breach this Code may be subject to investigation, disciplinary action, suspension or removal from office in accordance with the Club Constitution and relevant policies.
